I've had the switch replaced 2 times in the last 8 years and dread any time the mercury drops below zero. If the problem continues to occur, your car may need repairs. Pushing the car even an inch or two is usually enough to relieve pressure.
A less common cause for a shifter being stuck in park is a badly worn or faulty ignition switch. Make sure that it is plugged in and functioning. When the shift lever feels stuck, the first thing to consider is whether the parking brake was set before the service brake was released, or afterward.
Use a flathead screwdriver to pop the cover off.
